Having a screen room is a wonderful way to enjoy the sights and sounds and feels of the outdoors without worrying about those pesky mosquitoes. If you’re having one installed there are a number of options to consider, such as the size and shape of the screened area, and what materials you want to use. Another thing to ponder is whether you want a heavy-duty screen door or a light security screen door. Many homeowners aren’t even aware of these options. Let’s take a closer look at them.

  • Locks and Hardware Differences: One of the key differences between heavy-duty and light security screen doors is the lock mechanism. Some screen doors don’t have a lock. Some have a little lock inside the handle. Heavy-duty screen doors are more secure. They usually have a deadbolt lock (which slides from the door into the door frame) in addition to the handle lock. This is called a double-locking system. Before deciding on one of these door options, try to gauge the need for security in your screen room. Is the home in a high-crime area or a low-crime area? Do you trust all the neighbors? Will there be anything of value in the screen room? If so, will it be noticeable to passersby?
  • Mesh vs Screen: This option can be a little confusing because we are talking about screen doors here. Yet mesh and screen are distinct terms in the business. Basically, mesh refers to a heavy-duty screen. Heavy-duty screen doors often have a steel mesh material that is up to seven times stronger than your usual aluminum screen material. This is more secure from intruders and rowdy dogs, but it’s also more expensive. And a benefit of the lighter aluminum screens is that they allow more light, sound and breeze to come into your screen room. Both kinds of material do keep the mosquitos out, which is their crucial feature.
  • Frame Materials: Light security doors are often constructed of light-weight aluminum. They may also be made of vinyl, which will never rust but is less durable. Heavy-duty doors are usually made of solid steel, making them more secure and more durable, but again, more expensive.
